Las Vegas Considered Hosting a Second Formula One Race
Las Vegas came closer than many people realized to potentially hosting two Formula One races on consecutive weekends.
The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority and Formula One discussed holding a second race on the Las Vegas Strip immediately after the scheduled 2026 Las Vegas Grand Prix. The proposal was examined as a contingency plan in case the season-ending races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi could not take place because of continuing instability in the Middle East.
However, the idea was quickly rejected as impractical.
Why Formula One Considered a Second Las Vegas Race
The 2026 Formula One season is scheduled to conclude with:
- The Las Vegas Grand Prix on November 21
- The Qatar Grand Prix on November 29
- The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on December 6
Questions surrounding the safety and viability of the two Middle Eastern races prompted Formula One executives to examine alternative locations.
Because the entire Las Vegas street circuit, hospitality facilities, grandstands and operational infrastructure would already be in place, holding another race one week later initially appeared to offer a possible solution.
Formula One and Las Vegas officials ultimately concluded that the plan would create more problems than it solved.
Why the Second Race Was Rejected
LVCVA President and CEO Steve Hill said officials were concerned that holding two races on consecutive weekends could damage both events rather than strengthen them.
The Las Vegas Grand Prix is positioned as one of the most distinctive and premium events on the Formula One calendar. Asking spectators, sponsors and hospitality customers to return—or remain in Las Vegas—for a second race only days later could dilute demand.
There were also major logistical concerns.
Hosting another race would extend road closures, traffic disruptions, security operations and the use of temporary racing infrastructure throughout the resort corridor. NFL scheduling could create an additional conflict if the Las Vegas Raiders were playing at Allegiant Stadium during the proposed second race weekend.
Formula One CEO Stefano Domenicali has since indicated that the organization will not add another United States race as its contingency solution. If the Qatar and Abu Dhabi events cannot proceed, the championship is expected to conclude in Europe, with Imola, Italy, among the alternatives being considered. A final decision is expected by mid-September.
The Las Vegas Grand Prix Is Staying
Although the second-race proposal has been abandoned, the future of Formula One in Las Vegas remains secure.
Formula One and local officials recently announced a 10-year extension that is expected to keep the Las Vegas Grand Prix on the calendar through at least 2037.
Since its 2023 debut, the event has reportedly generated approximately $3.2 billion in economic activity for Southern Nevada across its first three races.
The extension reinforces Las Vegas’ position as a major international sports destination alongside events involving the Raiders, Golden Knights, Aces, major boxing cards and future Major League Baseball games.
What This Means for Las Vegas Visitors
For visitors, the important point is that there is still only one Las Vegas Grand Prix planned for 2026.
The race weekend will remain one of the busiest and most expensive periods of the year for Strip hotels, restaurants, transportation and premium experiences.
Travelers planning to attend should expect:
- Significant demand for centrally located hotels
- Higher room rates near the racing circuit
- Road closures and modified transportation routes
- Limited restaurant and nightlife reservations
- Premium pricing for race tickets and hospitality packages
Hotels situated inside or near the circuit can offer outstanding access, but guests should carefully consider how road restrictions may affect airport transfers and movement around the Strip.
